BEDRI RAHMI EYUBOGLU 1911 - 1975

Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu, who took painting lessons from Zeki Kocamemi during his secondary education in Trabzon, came to Istanbul in 1927 and worked in the Nazmi Ziya studio at the Academy of Fine Arts for two years. Later, Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu, who went to Paris and worked in the studio of André Lhote, is one of the artists who most quickly broke away from the influence of André Lhote in the history of Turkish painting. Having a structure that never shied away from experimentation makes Eyüboğlu a privileged figure in the history of Turkish painting. Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu is an artist who has been able to apply different techniques and influences to different forms and areas. He has kneaded the experiences he has gained from painting, mosaic, ceramic, murals, inscription, engraving and serigraphy techniques with his understanding of art. “Han Kahvesi”, which he made two years before his death, is one of the paintings in which Bedri Rahmi has been able to reveal all of the experiences he has gained since the beginning of his artistic life.

In the painting, where Eyüboğlu’s artistic experience of over fifty years is evident, the influences of Matisse and Dufy, who were influenced by the painter’s use of color during his Paris years, are particularly noticeable on the red table in front of the figures, and the folkloric elements he increasingly focused on after the “National Tours” and in the 60s are noticeable on the figures. The unhappy expressions on the faces of the two figures immediately behind the red table in the middle of the painting, the expressionlessness on the face of the figure on the left, which gives the impression that he is not there, and the expression of the figure playing the saz and singing on the far right, who is immersed in the music, are the striking elements of this painting by Bedri Rahmi.
