ERGİN İNAN b. 1943
Ergin İnan graduated from Istanbul Faculty of Law in 1963 and studied at the Department of Painting at the State School of Applied Fine Arts between 1964 and 1968. Bodies that are as fluid as water in terms of form and leave behind the fleeting taste of the form, faces and eyes with intertwined double perspectives that refer to different states of the soul, love of nature that transforms the mystery of the microcosm into a visual atlas, the plastic structure of horoscopes, falnames, talismans, seals and calligraphic writing that symbolize the mystical aspect of the Islamic world, a magical gaze attributed to organs such as the hands and feet of the body are reflections of Ergin İnan's visual memory. His art is rightfully nourished by the visual and intellectual energy emitted by cultures connected to each other like a chain: As an artist who breathes the geography of the East, Ergin İnan is interested in the mystical belief rituals of the Near East, wanders within the boundaries of the rational and critical form language of the West, and brings together the idea of love, light, body and faith in the “Mesnevi” with existentialism’s effort to understand and give meaning to life. In addition, theories of creation that concern all humanity are another intellectual expansion that directs his painting language. This is a perspective that respects the multi-part course and identity of history, and opens the body and thought to the cultural and intellectual values of an existential world. For this reason, the human body, which forms the backbone of İnan’s art, is a sign of the relationship of man, who is at the center of everything, with the infinite. In some examples, bodies that become thin and elongated like a touchstone, refer to a content that does not exist if it cannot be shown, without encountering a clear subject. This is not a clear personality, but the inner consciousness of the body and time that turns into an image.
