Damien Hirst’s art is shaped by the idea that art is a reflection of life. The butterfly image that the artist frequently uses in his works is also related to this idea, as the butterfly symbolizes the life cycle, growth and change. Moreover, the unique pattern of each butterfly echoes the individuality of the person. Hirst frequently uses the butterfly as a symbol in his works. Perhaps the most striking of these, In and Out of Love, which was first exhibited in 1991 and then repeated at Tate Modern in 2012, features a room full of butterflies emerging from their cocoons and completing their life cycles in front of the eyes of visitors. In accordance with the argument that “Good art should be both experienced and remembered,” Hirst
as an experience that makes its viewers a part of the artwork. Consisting of six prints depicting gliding butterflies, Wonder of You (2015) explores the spiritual symbolism of the butterfly. Each of the polymer engraving-on-lithography prints that make up the series refers to a sense or emotion. Hirst used foil blocks to capture the sense of movement given by real butterflies. He subjectivizes the message carried by the butterfly with subtitles such as Your Touch, Your Feeling, Your Heart, Your Beauty that he adds to each work. Hirst says that his fascination with butterflies stems from the fact that they appear alive even though they are dead. Although Hirst is known for his obsession with death, the butterfly symbol refers to the celebration of life rather than death. Hirst continues to work with this image in his series For the Love of God (2015), framing a single butterfly within a strikingly colored heart as a reflection of life. Hirst says of love, “Love is a beautiful thing. I see it as a small antidote to the horrors of the world.”
