FAUSTO ZONARO

He studied painting at the Rome Academy of Fine Arts, and was influenced by writers such as Edmondo de Amicis and Theophile Gautier, who had previously been to Istanbul and published their memoirs about the city, and came to Istanbul in 1891. He brought with him to Istanbul not only the paintings "The Woman Stringing Pearls" but also "Nina", "Customs" and "Girl Carrying a Pumpkin". Fausto Zonaro was passionately devoted to one of his masterpieces, “The Woman Stringing Pearls (Filatrice di Perle). He turned down all customers who wanted to buy the painting during his lifetime. Many of the works he made between 1896 and 1909 were purchased by important figures, especially the Palace and the state. In 1896, he won the praise of Sultan Abdülhamid I with his painting “Ertuğrul Süvari Alavi’s Passage on the Galata Bridge” and was appointed as the Palace painter with the title of “Painter of the Prophet’s Majesty Shahriar”. He gave painting lessons to Prince Abdülmecid and gained his close friendship. Sultan Abdülhamid, who liked the painting he made in 1898 called “Dömeke Harbi” very much, allocated the mansion at number 50 Akaretler to Zonaro and awarded him the Ottoman Medal. The mansion, which Zonaro used as a workshop and home, was used for 12 years. It became one of the most popular places for Istanbul intellectuals and high society. Enver Pasha, Prince Caliph Abdülmecid, Recaizade Mahmud Ekrem, Prince Burhaneddin, Osman Hamdi and Celal Esad Arseven were among the permanent guests of the artist's studio-like house. The painting "Girl Carrying a Pumpkin" that the artist brought from Italy was purchased by Prince Abdülmecid. After changing hands several times, the painting entered the permanent collection of the Sakıp Sabancı Museum. Zonaro returned to Italy in 1909 after the overthrow of Sultan Abdülhamid II. He took the painting "Woman Stringing Pearls" back with him when he returned. The painting was purchased by a Turkish collector many years after his death and brought to Türkiye.
