Mahmoud C. Uda
In 1918, he entered the preparatory department of Sanayi-i Nefise and continued his education at İbrahim Çallı Studio. Starting from 1919, he participated in Galatasaray exhibitions. In 1923, he went to Munich and continued his studies at Hans Hofmann Studio with Ali Avni Çelebi and Zeki Kocamemi. In 1924, he passed the state exam and went to Paris to study at Julian Academy and Lucien Simon Studio for four years. Returning to Istanbul, Mahmut Cûda started his professional life as an assistant teacher at the Fine Arts Academy, but after a while he left this position because he could not get along with the academic community. Joining the Independent Painters and Sculptors Association, Cûda also contributed to the establishment of the Turkish Painters and Sculptors Society in 1942. As part of his domestic tours, he first went to Trabzon and then to Bitlis in 1943. The artist, who was interested in art, wrote articles on art and published the magazine Güzel Sanatlar in 1952. Mahmut Cûda, who chose a unique path in his art, interpreted the cubist and constructivist art movements in his works by blending the influences of the classical art tradition. Each object that makes up his still lifes, in addition to containing the feeling of a plastic mass in space, goes beyond this sense of mass with its clear and bright appearance. It draws the viewer into the mystery of a world beyond nature, which is “more nature.”
