RUDOLF ERNST - REVERIE DU SOIR A LA CORNE D'OR

RUDOLF ERNST - REVERIE DU SOIR A LA CORNE D'OR

RUDOLF ERNST 1854-1932

Reverie du soir a la corne d'or

Signed

Oil on canvas

120 x 80 cm.

Ernst's painting, which is set in a setting with an Istanbul silhouette, focuses on two women in the palace. In the painting, which depicts the women's clothing of the palace and its surroundings in fine detail at the end of the 19th century, a seated female figure is also included in the background, and three different costumes are handled with the feeling of a catalogue. Although a significant part of the background is covered with cypress trees, the road extending between the cypress trees and the redness of the setting sun shining on the contours of the trees give depth and liveliness to the ground. The architectural details surrounding the garden, the cage indicating that this is the harem of the garden, the garden walls carved from stone and the marble ornamental pool with fountain given a central place just behind the figures allow us to immediately define this isolated area belonging to the woman. Being in a space isolated from the rest of the city and the rest of the garden is like a privilege for the viewer. In the heavy and hot summer air felt by the yellowish tone of the sky, these women in their light summer clothes, and the fan detail that becomes more pronounced with the sharp gesture of the woman's right hand in the front, give the painting a gracefulness that is encountered in German Romantics in general. Detailed consideration of each woman's costume, similar ones selected for the range are in the Topkapi collection
The rare form and different head toilets found in the museum are the result of Ernst's extensive study of the women of the period.
